With the consistent fight against the spread of infectious diseases, scientists are continuously searching for modern weapons that particularly target pathogenic organisms.
Researchers have known for decades that broad-spectrum UV-C light, which encompasses a wavelength of 200 to 280 nm, is exceedingly effective in slaughtering microscopic organisms & virus by destroying the molecular bond that hold the DNA/RNA together. The UV-C light is being routinely used to keep the sterilized dental instruments decontaminated in dental workplaces too. Interestingly, a few years back Dr. Brenner & his colleagues hypothesized that UV-C could kill microbes and it is also viable against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria and aerosolized viruses.
Exposure to UV-C Light:
Any exposure to UV-C radiation even for a brief period of time can be unsafe. If the light is of good intensity, the level of damage depends upon the exposure time, the intensity of the radiation, wavelength and of course individual’s sensitivity level to UV-C.
UV-C exposure to skin can cause sunburn or pigmentation/tanning carcinogenic. It may also reduce the elasticity of the skin and cause premature aging.
UV-C exposure to the eye can cause corneal inflammation, conjunctivitis, inability to see the bright light, and exposure for longer duration can cause cataract.
Precautions to be taken for the UV-C:
- # Use protective eyewear.
- # Avoid direct exposure to UV-C radiation to the skin.
- # Do not look directly at the beam.
- # Turn off the power button when the equipment is not in use.
- # Place the UV-C sanitization equipment as close as possible to the object that has to be sanitized.
- # Keep away from the reach of children.
- # Keep the UV-C Box door close when not in use.
The use of UV-C light is of great advantage but only when used with precautions. As we know that science is a boon as well as a curse if mishandled. The use of UV-C light in the disinfection process has been proven effective since more than 100 years. The UV-C sanitization technology also eliminates the use of various chemical sterilizers, which are produced by hazardous by-products, but UV-C lights do not produce any of the by-products. There are UV-C sanitization box and UV-C handheld device available in the market, which is of great use in the field of surface disinfection procedure, but must be used with precautions too.
