The Most Significant Advancement In The Digital Radiography & Its Impact On The Daily Dental Practice

Dental digital radiography refers to x-ray imaging used in dentistry to take radiographs. It uses digital x-ray & sensors to produce enhanced computer images of dental anatomy. Dental radiography is being widely used to detect, diagnose and treat oral conditions. It’s a type of imaging that uses digital x-ray & sensors replacing the traditional photographic x-ray films, and in comparison produces enhanced images of gums, teeth, and bone.

When was digital radiography used in dentistry?

Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x-rays in the year1895. Since then various advancements have taken place and digital radiography was introduced in the mid-1980. The dawn of the digital era in dental radiography came into existence in 1987 with the first digital radiograph called radio Visio Graphy i.e. RVG. The main factor differentiating digital radiography from conventional one is its response to radiation. The dynamic range of digital detectors is about 400-fold compared to films used in dentistry.

Two types of digital radiography:

Digital radiographs can be taken inside (intraoral) or outside (extraoral)of the mouth. Intraoral x-rays mainly give images of cavities and help to check the status of bone health or any gum infection whereas extra oral x-rays not only help to detect the appearance of each tooth but give overall details of the dentition by detecting any abnormality in jaw growth, TMJ or by detecting any defect.

Why is digital radiography important?

Contrast resolution is an important parameter in accurately detecting any radiograph for caries. All digital radiographs are managed by software that allows image manipulation by applying various filters to help detect any defects. The high resolution helps in detecting small file tips as small as 0.6mm. Any periodontal problems like bone loss, support of bony structures, and presence of lamina dura can be finely appreciated on a digital radiograph. Early detection of cavities can be done by saving time, money, and patient discomfort. Easily these images can be stored and records can be maintained for years without any damage. it becomes easy to share the image and discuss for an accurate diagnosis.

Impact of digital radiography on daily dental practice:

These x-rays are taken with the help of an x-ray machine and a sensor. The sensor is placed inside the patient’s mouth and the x-ray machine is placed outside at an angle to the sensor to click images. Nowadays these x-ray machines have come effortlessly. Instead of using a wall mounting machine, the portable version x-ray machine has become convenient to operate. These machines are lightweight, easy to handle without causing any chance of error and reduce dentists’ additional exposure to x-ray radiation.

Runyes portable x-ray:

Runyes Portable X Ray

Runyes has a high-frequency portable x-ray machine that is compact, lightweight and causes minimal scattering of radiation thus acting as a safety measure for both dentists as well as the patient. It produces a clear, high-quality image with better shooting effect as there is an inbuilt canon tube and a shorter exposure time

A 0.4 second exposure time allows less exposure to radiation and superior shooting result. The circuit component used in the machine is incorporated from South Korea which has a high-frequency closed-loop control and provides a high-quality image. 150 x-ray shots can be taken continuously when the battery is charged. Because of its portability, it can be easily used for a multi-chair clinic.

Runyes intra oral sensor:

Runyes intraoral sensor provides a high-quality image with good contrast imaging. It’s based on APS CMOS technology. Its unique size of 1.3 with an ergonomically designed shape allows for easy positioning in adults as well as kids. The sensor is highly tear-resistant and waterproof.

Conclusion:

Digital radiography is of great help in routine check-ups, paediatric cases, surgeries, orthodontic cases, implant planning, or endodontic treatment where the slightest of changes can be viewed giving quality treatment. Digital radiography is a boon to the dentist as all images can be taken in a short period with easy placement of sensor and the portable x-ray machine making it convenient to be used in a multi-chair practice.
